Binge eating disorder (BED) is marked by bouts of (seemingly) uncontrollable eating and usually followed by feelings of guilt or shame.  It sometimes affects weight, but doesn’t always. Why do we do it?

There has been much research into binge eating behavior, it seems to be affecting more and more of us.  This research may give insights into why and how it happens.  There seem to be three distinct factors that contribute or trigger (or make one more susceptible to) binge eating, and the bad news is our modern environment isn’t helping us.  The good news is AWARENESS is a great starting point for change, and an important reminder to not beat ourselves up too much… if you have been exposed to or experiencing these three factors, it seems to predict binge eating as inevitable.

  1. A history of dieting
  2. Highly palatable cues (environmental food cues or an accessibility to “very tasty food”)
  3. The presence of stress

Most of us are exposed to 2 out of 3 of these conditions on a daily basis… it is no wonder so many of us eat too much or eat for the wrong reasons.

There are ways to beat B.E.D. (binge eating disorder) it involves therapy and retraining your brain, it’s not really about willpower, however it will involve awareness, taking responsibility and getting help.

Check out this video where Mary Boggiano discusses her research on Stress Opiods and Binge Eating.
